Sophie Elphick
Senior Veterinarian and Director
Sophie grew up on a dairy farm, and her first experience with veterinary practice was memorable. A cow suffering from milk fever had fallen on an electric fence. The visiting Vet gave the animal 4 in 1 and it got up and walked away. Sophie was hooked!
Sophie's motivation to provide the best care comes from a desire to be an advocate for the animal at all times, believing that excellence in clinical care for her patients is her best client service, and that communicating a clear plan works best for your pets in her care.
At home, Sophie and her husband James have two sons and a daughter. They breed Warmbloods for showjumping, and keep their own horses alongside client horses for breeding and foaling. Also on the farm are sheep and chickens. Sophie's pet dogs, Zevah the Saluki and Lulu the Greyhound are often in-clinic greeting clients.

Ruby Hatten
Senior Veterinarian
Originally from the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Ruby studied her Veterinary Science degree in Wagga Wagga, NSW, graduating in 2014.
An animal lover at heart, Ruby enjoys all aspects of companion and production animal practice.
In her opinion there is nothing greater or more thumbing than the bond we share with our pets. Indeed you will rarely see her out and about without her shaggy sidekick "Smith" the Tasmanian Smithfield.
Ruby also has a passion for baroque breeds of horses and enjoys breeding and riding her mare, Shirley. Ruby spends the balance of her spare time hiking, hitting the beach, free diving, camping and travelling.

Gemion Court
Veterinarian
Gem joined the SSVC team as a mixed practice Veterinarian in 2022 after graduating from the University of Melbourne. Gem worked previously for many years as a swab attendant for Harness Racing Victoria. Attributing her reason as to becoming a vet being strongly influenced by the early 2000’s kids TV show ‘The Saddle Club’ and convincing her parents for horse riding lessons.
Gem values how important animals are in our society. From pets to production animals, they constantly give, and it’s due to this fact she believes they deserve the best care we can possibly give them. Motivated to find the best outcome for both animal and owner whilst considering the unique factors behind each individual case.
The most important thing Gem wishes to accomplish in a consultation is a health plan. It is important that clients leave a consult with a clear understanding of what can be done, whether diagnostics or further work ups are required, or just booking in for the next yearly check up. Gem appreciates it is vital that clients are always in the loop regarding their animals health. She has a keen interest in further education in the field of equine surgery.
Gem has two cats, Stella and Artemis, and after many years of riding lessons, birthday and Christmas wishes, has just recently acquired her first horse Leila.
Fun fact: Gemion’s name is pronounced ‘jemmy-on’ named after a Belgian farmhouse. The farmstead ‘Gemioncourt’ was used as makeshift fort during the battle of Quatre Bras in 1815, although Gem has no Belgian heritage or military connection to the battle.

Casey Herdman
Veterinarian
Growing up, Casey always knew she wanted to be a Veterinarian. She was always around animals and would jump at any chance to head up to her cousins farm to look after and spend time with the animals there. She had a big interest in horse riding when she was younger and rode for many years. Unfortunately, she does not have horses anymore, however she does have two young very active border collies which keep her on her toes when she is not working.
Casey studied a Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience at La Trobe University prior to completing the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at The University of Melbourne in 2021. She started at Station Street not long after graduating. Casey strives to provide the best possible care for all pets, whether that be small or large animals and makes sure she listens to and addresses all of her clients' concerns, so that their pets can enjoy the highest quality of life.
Casey enjoys all aspects of mixed practice, particularly being out on the road doing large animal work. In her spare time she likes to workout at team training, go on hikes/adventure outdoors with friends, travel as much as possible and spend time with her two dogs.

Kathryn (Kat) Hilson
Veterinarian
Kat has always wanted to be a vet since the age of 5, and as she has gotten older, the fascination has continued to grow and develop. She has a deep passion for providing the best quality of care to her patients and would like to improve the overall well-being of patients in the local community. She thrives on building relationships with local clients to achieve gold standard in the practice.
In a consult, Kat likes to work with clients to achieve optimal outcomes regardless of presenting problems, including a short and long term plan, maximising patient benefit, and building client rapport by listening to their concerns, answering questions and prioritising patient care.
Kat is originally from the Berwick/Pakenham area, but went to James Cook University in Townsville for her Veterinary Science degree. She now lives locally and has one dog, Summer. Summer and Kat love spending time at the beach and with family!
